On Our Way To Thailand (17-Dec-2001-14-45):
2:45 PM local time, Monday, December 17 (0745 Dec. 17 UTC) 01 15 N 103 28 E. Temp. 88, Humidity 76%, Cloud Cover 100%. Strait of Malacca.

Greetings from the crew of Maverick.

We left Nongsa Point Marina, Batam, Indonesia, across the Singapore Strait from Singapore, today at first light and are ghosting along the west coast of Malaysia in the legendary pirate-ridden Strait of Malacca, enroute to Phuket, Thailand. We have light wind on the beam and flat seas. We're going slow, but, unlike the last trip, not working hard.

We had planned a stop or two in Malaysia, but Mr. Shrode's mother is gravely ill and we are going to proceed directly to Phuket so he can return home to visit her.

We made a clean sweep of repairs in Singapore, fixing the computer screen, the autopilot, and the monkey-chewed glasses of the skipper. Now that the computer screen is fixed we will have few reasons not to relate the story of the trip from Bali, and that will be forthcoming beginning a couple of days from now.

Meanwhile, thanks for the good wishes, most of which, I believe, got through via an internet cafe in Batam. We'll be in touch soon.
